Algeria's 200MW Solar Power Plant Officially Begins Operation
According to the Algerian media Algérie360, on May 18, 2026, the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energy of Algeria, Murad Ajjar, inaugurated a 200-megawatt solar power station in Tendla, Mekidia Province, marking the entry of Algeria's renewable energy development plan into the stage of actual implementation.
This project is the first operational project under President Teben's goal of achieving 1.5 million megawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2035. It aims to diversify the power sources through the development of clean energy and enhance the national energy security. The power station covers an area of approximately 400 hectares and is equipped with 20 photovoltaic fields, 364,000 solar panels, 20 transformers, a 30-kilovolt substation, and automated clean, monitoring, fire detection and protection systems.
The Mekidiael Province is rich in solar energy resources and has the natural conditions necessary for developing large-scale solar power projects. Once this project is put into operation, it will lay the foundation for Algeria to advance its energy transition and expand the supply of clean electricity. Although there is still a considerable gap from the 1.5 million megawatts target by 2035, the official commissioning and operation of the first project indicates that Algeria's renewable energy strategy is moving from the planning stage to the implementation stage.
