PV Wafer Market Tightens as Prices Jump on Strong Global Demand
The global solar supply chain is seeing renewed price pressure, with N-type wafer prices rising sharply this week as demand from overseas markets accelerates.
Data released by the China Silicon Industry Association shows that wafer prices increased across major product categories. The average transaction price of N-type G10L wafers reached RMB 1.12 per piece, marking a weekly increase of 40%. Meanwhile, G12R wafers rose to RMB 1.14 per piece, up 26.67%, while G12 wafers increased to RMB 1.22 per piece, up 10.91%.
The price increase has quickly affected other parts of the PV value chain. Solar cell prices climbed to around RMB 0.33–0.35/W, while module prices edged higher to approximately RMB 0.69–0.71/W.
Export Demand Boosts Wafer Purchases
Market analysts attribute the latest wafer price movement mainly to stronger overseas procurement activity.
While China’s domestic solar market has remained relatively steady, international buyers have accelerated wafer purchases amid concerns over possible changes in U.S. trade policies. In addition, the arrival of India’s peak solar installation season has contributed to increased export demand.
The market has also been influenced by a “buy early to avoid higher prices” mentality, leading to faster inventory replenishment and tighter short-term supply.
Production Expansion Remains Limited
On the supply side, PV wafer manufacturers have not significantly increased output. Industry operating rates remained stable compared with the previous week, making it difficult for suppliers to quickly respond to the sudden increase in demand.
Among different wafer formats, 183 mm wafers saw the strongest price growth, largely because they are widely used in overseas markets where purchasing activity has increased.
The latest price movement reflects a changing balance between supply and demand in the solar industry. While it remains uncertain whether the increase will develop into a long-term trend, continued demand growth and inventory changes will be key factors to watch.
The wafer market is entering a critical period as manufacturers balance recovering prices with the need for sustainable demand from global solar markets.
