The First Phase of Iraq's Largest Solar Power Station Has Been Put into Operation

Recently, the Karbala Solar Power Station located in the central region of Iraq's Karbala Province has been put into operation. The initial power generation capacity of this station is 22MW. According to the Iraqi News Agency, the capacity of this power station will be expanded to 75MW within two months.

It is reported that this project was announced in 2019. As one of the first solar power bidding projects in Iraq, the final installed capacity was 300MW.

Iraq plans to achieve a solar power installation capacity of 12 GW by the end of this century, while as of the end of 2024, its solar power installation capacity was only 42 MW.

In July this year, the French company Total E&P began construction of a 1GW photovoltaic power station in southern Iraq. The first phase of 250MW is expected to be operational by the end of the year. A month ago, the US developer UGT Renewables announced that it had signed an agreement with the Iraqi federal government to build a 3GW solar energy project, along with a 500 MWh energy storage facility.

In May this year, Iraq's first solar village was officially put into operation. In the same month, a 2MW photovoltaic array in the government building also successfully went online. (This article is translated from pv-magazine. Please indicate the source when reprinting.)
